D is for Dandelions

Dandelions are my favorite flower.

Yes, I know. Dandelions are a "weed". But they way I see it, the only difference between weeds and prize-winning roses is the amount of effort involved in raising them.

Dandelions are pretty. They're yellow and cheerful, and they're *really* easy to grow! When I was young, I ran an ongoing war with my father as I blew dandelion spores all over the yard he was striving to keep clear of everything but grass. When I finally got my own house, I encouraged the dandelions to take over.

I still have grass when it's not dandelion season. When they do bloom, they make a sea of yellow, followed by a season of spore-snow as I "plant" the next generation's crop.

  1. I've always loved dandelions. We live in Hawaii but we spent 5 yrears in MI going to college, and lived next to a persnickety retired guy. He used to come sneaking over and round-up my dandelions.
In return, I stole his pussy willows when they came out.
He didn't think it was a fair trade.

  4. I guess dandelions are fine if they stay where you want them too. Sometimes they crop up in between other plants and make them look messy. :O)

  5. So happy to meet another dandelion lover. They are also my favorite flower. And for all the same reasons, although I never seeded my father's lawn. We had enough in the fields to keep me happy.
Each year, I can hardly wait the first dandelion of spring.
